Our end-of-year review for EMG customers and partners

As the year draws to a close, our last newsletter of the year traditionally features a brief review of the past 12 months.

From a technical-content point of view, there were perhaps a few topics particularly worth mentioning for users of EMG solutions, which we have addressed in various newsletter articles and on our new homepage.

  1. The integration of MESACON Messelektronik GmbH's thickness measurement solutions into EMG's product portfolio as the EMG iTiM product family.
With the portfolio expansion in the area of thickness measurement, EMG can now offer customised thickness measurement systems for both hot and cold strip as well as for further strip processing. All common and proven sensor technologies in the industry today are now part of the EMG portfolio. These solutions belong to the EMG iTiM product family and include X-ray, isotope and laser-based optical systems based on triangulation measurement or confocal measurement technology. Thickness measurement is an almost indispensable prerequisite for the production and further processing of flat material in the entire process chain. EMG is thus increasingly developing into a full-range supplier for quality assurance solutions in the flat sector.

  2. The increased focus on the new strip width measurement EMG iCAM® with the features hole and edge crack detection.
EMG iCAM® extends the spectrum and functionality of EMG solutions for strip width measurement. In addition to high-precision width measurement, this system also offers the option of determining the width of slit strip online and reliably detecting both holes and edge cracks in production.

  3. Related to this, highlighting the EMG range of products and services for steel and aluminium service centres.
Service centres face special challenges as their most important customers, the automotive companies, are facing a paradigm shift. A decreasing share of steel in the automotive sector is expected, while at the same time the trend is towards more and more high-strength and ultra-high-strength steels with low thicknesses (keyword: e-mobility). Consequently, service centres will have to assert themselves on the market by using the latest technologies and by differentiating themselves in terms of service, quality, agility and flexibility.

  4. The further expansion of the application of the EMG & SMS solution EMG hotCAM for the closed-loop control of a hot rolling mill.
The highest added value with EMG hotCAM strip position determination for hot rolling stands can be achieved by implementing closed-loop control. In combination with the automation solution X-Pact® of the SMS group in the sense of a closed control loop, EMG hotCAM offers the plant operator considerable potential for damage minimisation and yield increase in the hot rolling process. The embedding in the X-Pact® Sense family of the SMS group ensures that the realisation of such a control concept is realised in the proven software and hardware environment of the X-Pact® landscape of the SMS group. The year 2022 allowed the successful implementation of several such projects. This applies both to existing customers of the SMS group and to customers who have not yet relied on the X-Pact® solutions of SMS.

  5. Modernising your equipment
Another point from a technical-economic point of view is the question of the necessity of modernisations. The long-lasting use of all systems is ensured at EMG by the availability of support and spare parts for many years - far beyond the legally prescribed period. However, due to the limited age-related storage capacity and the discontinuation of certain components, EMG can no longer guarantee the availability of components after a certain point in time, despite careful, forward-looking planning.
Here you will find: a selection of component discontinuations for strip guiding controls and quality assurance systems.

All in all, 2022 was another very active and innovative year that brought our partners and us one step further in terms of optimising production processes, organisational procedures and consolidating partnerships.

We thank you very much for your cooperation and wish you the same motivation and confidence for the challenges ahead in the year 2023!
